Great article in the New York Times today about consumer robots. After many years of sci-fi fun, robots are finally entering the home. Lots of cute and cuddlies out there, but the real money so far is going to something that looks less like a human and more like a Frisbee. The Roomba robots racked up more that $142 million in sales in 2005. It probably helps that they've been embraced by the geek community (we encountered one in the SxSW green rooms), in part because the company, iRobot, has kept the tech open for hacking. Here's on hack we'd like to see: a Roomba that can write press releases, because, apparently, only machines like to read them these days.
